The Information
“It should always be remembered that many organs are still not completely developed by full term and birth should be regarded only as an incident in the whole developmental process.”
F Beck Human Embryology, Blackwell Scientific Publications,1985 p:5
“[All] organisms, howeverlarge and complex they might be as full grown, begin life as a single cell. This is true for the human being, forinstance, who begins life as a fertilized ovum.”
Dr. Morris Krieger “The Human Reproductive System” p:88
“It is the penetration of the ovum by a sperm and the resulting mingling of nuclear material
each brings to the union that constitutes the initiation of the life of a new individual.”
Clark Edward and Corliss Patten’s Human Embryology
“Human life begins atfertilization, the process during which a male gamete or sperm
(spermatozoon) unites with a female gamete or oocyte (ovum) to form a single cell called a
zygote. This highly specialized, totipotent cell marked the beginning of each of us as a unique individual.”, “A zygote is the beginning of a new human being (i.e., an embryo).”
Keith L. Moore, The Developing Human: Clinically Oriented Embryology, 7th edition.
“In thatfraction of a second when the chromosomes form pairs, the sex of the new child will be determined, hereditary characteristics received from each parent will be set, and a new life will have begun.”
Kaluger, G., and Kaluger, M., Human Development: The Span of Life, page 28-29, The C.V.
Mosby Co., St. Louis,1974
“In fusing together, the male and female gametes produce a fertilized single cell, the zygote, which is the start of a new individual.”
Rand McNally,Atlas of the Body 139 and 134
“….it is scientically correct to say that human life begins at conception.”
Dr. Micheline Matthews-Roth, Harvard Medical School: Quoted by Public Aairs Council.
With information like this out there, why are there people who argue that abortion, under non life-threatening circumstances, is not the same as taking a life? What information is there that counters the fact that life begins at conception? Is there any reason to believe otherwise?
When it comes to autonomy you cannot kill someone because they annoy you or have the potential to make your future difficult. No justice court system would accept the defendents objection “but he was going to make my life difficult”, as a legitimate reason for taking a life.
You may argue that the fetus isn’t a person yet. But thats ignorant of science. When it comes to the personnage of the fetus, as soon as fertilization occurs the zygote receives characteristics that are from both parents creating a unique individual. What they look like, what their personality will be, their hair color eye color, gender, ect., are already set in stone. You just stopped the further development of those features and more. So is there really a dispute that the zygote has a personage?
Some say if the child can’t survive on its own outside the womb then that means the child is not a person, but in reality that simply means he or she can’t survive on their own. They are at the most helpless state of a human life span. Does the disabled human, mean they’re not a person because they can’t survive without help? People treat disabled animals with more respect. There are many adult humans who lack rationality, lack self-awareness, lack relational capacity, does that then mean they are not a person? If so we should have mass euthanization here in America starting with the weak, sick, and elderly then the mentality weak individuals like those who make this argument. The same principle applies yet they do not want to see the truth.
And going further in the autonomy realm, the significant physical burdens, risk and potential life impacts are from one’s own decision to have sexual relations. We know the consequences yet we do it anyway to fulfill our lusts. How is it not seen as actions have consequences? You are responsible for your own body and what you do with it will affect what comes out. Some will frame it as a “refusal to sustain another life with ones own body”, but is a word work around to disguise what the act is. They will use the metaphor when discribing pregnancies as waking up chained to a person that is dependent on you to live, having no say so in how they got there in the first place. But this is not the same, we know how we get pregnant, we know what happens and in the moment we don’t care, why, because we want to quench the fire of lusts inside of us. Not caring about tomorrow. Yet when tomorrow comes, we pretend we have no clue what happened, blaming alcohol abuse.
Frames
Similar to how framing it as “killing” would be an oversimplification of pregnancy termination. Of course you’re not actually going in yourself and killing the baby, someone else is doing it for you. Just as the framing “refusal to sustain another life with one’s own” is just saying you don’t want to take responsibility for your actions. The redefining of conception in the 60s just goes to show that it was for the consernes raised during that time of overpopulation and resource shortage worries. That was big during that time and it was used to convince a generation of young already rebellious people to accept the counter norm narrative. To rebel against the already standard narrative that was set for a millennia. “Fight the system”, and push against religion became the new norm. The same people who scream I trust the science those same people that say I believe in science, their minds will go blank when discussing this topic of abortion. Suddenly science doesn’t look so appealing when it disrupts me me me. Claims that “science doesn’t say when life begins” or that it’s purely religious usually conflate biology with moral philosophy.
The reality is biology confirms moral philosophy, and science is inexplicably tied to religion. It was, to the dismay of some, the scientific revolution (which were all belevers of God) that got the scientific advancements that we enjoy and respect now. It was said that the Bible was Gods words and Science books are Gods fulfilled works in the natural world.
And I understand that some people have an adverse reaction when religion comes into the picture but that would be like being upset when math equations come up in every day life. Once you know of it, you cannot escape its application in our world is indisputable. Similarly God and his hand in our natural world is inescapable once you know of the formation of the universe.
The Unfortunate Reality
When a womans life is in danger due to a pregnancy than the unfortunate reality is that the child has to be aborted to save the life of the mother, there is no dispute on that. Even though there are some who will protest against. I say, the woman has to choose between her life and her babies, and that is a true dilemma. But this narritive gets tangled with those who want to put their own at the forefront of the debate. People who want to save their social status and lifestyles place themselves in the shoes of those who have to choose between life and death. But those who spot that the shoes do not fit, are labled villainous. When it is them who are the deceitful ones.
They also place themselves in the coat of the sexually abused. A gray area comes with this topic. Along with me, it’s generally aggred that the womans womb and dignity was taken and her body abused. That is another area where the woman has to make a choice. I believe there is still the philosophy of the silver lining that can be placed here, even though it is understably not often seen, tragedies do have good that come from it. Awareness of this act becomes the norm, men become more cautious of overstepping and are able to spot where overstepping occurs in others and women become safer and safer over time. But that is again wishful thinking, even though it is true, this is understandably not the mindset of most, let alone those who go through it. But like I said there are wolves in sheeps clothing who know of this as well, and will steal the coat of the rape victim. Using the emotions of those who have gone through or have deep sympathy for victims of rape. All to save not their life, but to save their life style. And once more when it is spotted that the coat is not theirs, no one seems to care, and are far to deceived by the slick talk and word play of the wolves.
The Pre Judgement: The Supporters Rational
Is it not true that the reason most are persuaded to have an abortion, is the fear of what that child might take from them? The fear that the soon to be parents will be robbed of their current way of life, robbed of the most precious thing to them in that moment, their own freedom, their identity. After all, isnt the rational of the modern proponent of this is that the unborn-child is just a leech, a parisite? And what do we do with parasites? We get rid of them.
