There is no theory that can best explain why Christianity grew in followers, other than the Resurrection theory.
Introduction
In this I will give my reasoning that strengthens my faith. In Peters letter to the scattered newly converted Christians in five Roman provinces, he says :”but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect.”.
And so I will show that there is reason for my belief in not only God, but Christianity. That it is not a blind faith that the early Christians grounded their faith in. That there is not only evidence but reason on which Christianity and therefore Judaism from which Christianity has its roots. Reason and evidence that surpasses other faiths, religions, and world views that people have become put of touch with. I believe that its not just people who don’t believe in God who lost touch, but even more so the average Christian, that has lost touch with the evidence and reasons for their own faith. We are to be the image of God and that was NOT meant to mean Humans look alike to God. This is a FALSE assumption due to incorrect interpretations of the Bible.
The phrase “Image of God” meant -among other things- we are to mirror his morality which was shown eventually through Jesus the Christ. We have not done that, and this has lead people to not only misunderstand and therefore not believe, but also reject the faith and its reason and evidence all together. Parents giving wrong interpretations to their children, pastors and priests setting immoral standards in the temples, blatantly wrong interpretations given of verses and chapters in the bible. All of this culminates to people being genuinely confused, and some having long lasting anger until their end. Where all that was needed was a basic understanding that did not come from modern Christians own misunderstandings of the faith. Its not just the fault of Christians but of those who had a grudge against Christianity from the start and wanted to share that grudge with others, spreading falsities to mislead others. But again I place the majority of fault at the feet of Christians. And again we are to be the image of God, and if someone gets a skewed view of God, it is not the fault of God, it is entirely on us.
This all bothers me to no end but either way I’ve ranted enough.
I will be going over the main objections most people have when the topic of the resurrection and Jesus’ appearances after his crucifixion is brought up. I may add that these are only the surface talking about objections and evidence for the resurrection. The scholarly opinions obviously go far beyond what I can explain with my limited expertise, but I will go over the theories and the rebuttals to the theories.
As a side note I will not be arguing with points from the position of a Christian. Or with the assumption that the rest of the New Testament is accurate in every detail, that is another topic that will only distract from the point. I will instead be arguing from facts that are agreed upon by a majority of New Testament scholars as well as historians. So with this established, it means that even if the rest of the New Testament is inaccurate, it cannot take away validity from these established facts about Jesus and his death and the resurrection claims.
One is the conspiracy theory to explain the resurrection, the myth or legend theory, the hallucination theory. As a side tag along, I will also bring up the popular internet critic objection to the resurrection, The Argument from Silence Theory. In order of understandable to ridiculous theories. There are much more ridiculous theories like the twin theory and many others but for sake of time I will not talk about them. It’s bad enough I’m bringing up the Argument from Silence.
The short and sweet version of what you are about to read is that Christianity and Judaism are not from simpletons in the desert. That the average person, theist and atheist alike, are wildly misinformed on Christianity.
And that evidence is overwhelming -from a historical lens- about the resurrection claims. And that, if agreed, to be true, its hard to deny not only the existence of God, but Jesus being God incarnate.
Firstly, the job of a historian is supposed to come up with various hypotheses to explain the facts or interpretations of history through primary and secondary sources. The hypothesis that can best explain them is the result of what is most probable to have occurred. Meaning a high amount of reason is used to uncover the established facts of the history settled today. But due to technology advancements history is notoriously provisional. Meaning the evidence that was once seen as established can be unsettled over time depending on new archaeological findings better analytical processes and so forth. Hence the coming reasoning behind my faith.
